Everything you need to know about dining at Vatan

Dietary & Menu

Is Vatan 100% vegetarian?

Yes. Vatan is a pure vegetarian restaurant — no meat, no chicken, no fish, no eggs, ever. Our kitchen has never prepared non-vegetarian food.

Does Vatan have Jain-friendly food?

Yes. We offer a dedicated Jain Thali ($20.99) and many Jain-friendly items throughout the menu, prepared without root vegetables (no onion, garlic, potatoes, carrots, or beets). Jain items are marked (J) on our menu. See our Jain & Swaminarayan page →

Does Vatan have a Swaminarayan Thali?

Yes. Our Swaminarayan Thali ($21.99) is prepared per Swaminarayan dietary guidelines — no onion or garlic. It includes 2 vegetables, kathol, rice, khichdi, kadhi, dal, pickle, jaggery, sweet, raita, papad, and farsan.

Are vegan options available?

Yes. Many dishes are naturally vegan — including most chaat items, lentil preparations, vegetable curries, rice dishes, and street food. Paneer, ghee, and yogurt-based dishes are the main non-vegan items. Our staff can help identify vegan-friendly choices.

What is a Thali and what does it include?

A Thali is a traditional Indian meal served on a large round platter with multiple small dishes — curries, dal, vegetables, rice, bread, pickles, chutneys, and a sweet. At Vatan, our Vatan Special Thali ($20.99) includes 3 vegetables, kathol, rice, khichdi, kadhi, dal, pickle, jaggery, garlic chutney, sweet, raita, papad, and farsan — with your choice of rotla, roti, poori, methi thepla, or puran poli. See our full Thali page for all varieties.

What is Kathiyawadi cuisine?

Kathiyawadi cuisine comes from the Kathiawar peninsula of Gujarat, India. It's bold, rustic, and typically spicier than standard Gujarati food — featuring dishes like Misal Pav, Sev Usal, Dabeli, and dry vegetable preparations with pungent spices. Vatan is one of the few New Jersey restaurants that specializes in this regional style.

What is the price range at Vatan?

Vatan is a mid-range restaurant ($$). Chaat and street food items start around $7–$10. Thalis range from $16.99 (Chaat Thali) to $21.99 (Swaminarayan Thali). Main course dishes are generally $12–$18.
